Symptoms
Both young and old leaves are affected by Ca deficiency.
Chlorotic spots with necrotic center appear on young tissues, turning to reddish brown later on. In severe cases, the immature leaves become necrotic, hooked and the spindle tip dies off. Stalks are thin and short.
Older leaves are often pale green with yellow mottling or ‘rusty’ appearance, caused by necrosis along the leaf margin. They may die prematurely. The rind may show internal browning as with magnesium deficiency.
Root development is often poor before any leaf symptoms occur.
Reasons
Calcium deficiency
Similar symptoms can be caused by magnesium deficiency. Since calcium deficiency occurs rather seldom in the field, these symptoms are considered as Mg deficiency in most cases.
Sugarcane - Deformation
