Symptoms
Chlorosis starts in young leaves and proceeds to the older leaves with ongoing deficiency. First leaves show chlorosis in the intercostal fields, later on they are uniformly light green or yellow. Stems, petioles and leaves often turn purple.
The leaves are stiff and curl inwards.
Reasons
Sulfur deficiency on young plants
Sulfur deficiency is similar in appearance to nitrogen deficiency, however it begins in younger leaves because sulfur is not as mobile as nitrogen within the plant.
Broccoli - Deformation
Symptoms
Chlorosis starts in young leaves and proceeds to the older leaves with ongoing deficiency. First leaves show chlorosis in the intercostal fields, later on they are uniformly light green or yellow. Frequently, brassica crops develop longer leaf stems and narrow spoon-like malformed leaves.
Reasons
Sulfur deficiency on young plants
Sulfur is required in relatively high quantities in brassicas for good growth and crop quality. Its uptake can be restricted with increasing N supply.
Sulfur deficiency might be confused with nitrogen deficiency, however it begins in younger leaves. Interveinal chloroses caused by Magnesium deficiency look similar, too.

Growth is severely stunted.
Reasons
Sulfur deficiency (right)
Sulfur is required in relatively high quantities in brassicas for good growth and crop quality. Its uptake can be restricted with increasing N supply.
Sulfur deficiency might be confused with nitrogen deficiency, however it begins in younger leaves. Interveinal chloroses caused by Magnesium deficiency look similar, too.
Sulfur deficiency made worse by
Acidic soils
Light, sandy soils (leaching)
Low organic matter
Poorly aerated soils (waterlogged soils
) Areas with low industrial emissions
Sulfur is important for
Requirement of steady supply in relatively high quantities
Important for head development and stress tolerance
Major role in crop quality
Better inner quality determinants and improved storage quality
Yara recommended fertilizers for Sulfur

Broccoli: Apply 5-10 grams per hill at head formation.
